Salvador earns IM norm in Italy

Fide Master Roland Salvador took his second international-master norm after settling for a draw with Grandmaster Miroljub Lazic of Serbia and Montenegro in the final round of the 2nd Lodi International Chess Festival in Lody, Italy.

The 24-year-old Salvador, a former Shell National Active Youth Chess grand champion, scored six points in the nine-round Swiss system tournament.

Aside from an IM norm, the Italy-based Salvador, a native of San Jose, Bulacan, also got a GM norm in the Genova Open in Italy, two years ago.

Fifth place

A board-four player of the Philippine Navy, Salvador shared fifth to 13th places with IM Constatin Lupulescu of Romania, IM Hedinn Steingrimsson of Israel, IM Abdulla Al-Rakib of Bangladesh, Lazic, IM Enamul Hossain of Bangladesh, IM Milan Mrdja of Croatia, GM Sinisa Drazic of Serbia and Montenegro and GM Pablo Ricardi of Argentina.

His successful campaign in Lodi coincided with the top-10 finish of Filipino GM Eugene Torre in the 148-player 2nd San Mariano Open, where compatriots Darwin Laylo and 12-year-old Wesley So also gained IM norms.

It was So’s second IM norm, while Laylo earned his first. Three norms are needed to earn an IM title.

Caoili

On the other hand, Woman International Master Arianne Bo Caoili, a Filipina-Australian chess player, got stuck at 4.5 points in the Lodi Open after losing to Italian IM Paolo Vezzosi in 24 moves of the Slav Defense, dropping her to the 31st-38th places.

Caoili was caught in a controversy when two GM admirers fought over her during the recently concluded 37th World Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy.

Meanwhile, former world championship candidate and Brazilian GM Henrique Mecking scored a surprise victory in the Lodi tournament with seven points, a half a point ahead of GM Sergey Fedorchuk of Ukraine, GM Levente Vajda of Romania and GM Evgeny Postny of Israel.

Mecking, considered one of the most promising players in the 1970s, suffered for years with a life-threatening illness before making a return to chess in 1993. (JAF)
