Red Bull wins Game 4, forces do-or-die vs. Ginebra

The Barangay Ginebra Kings came into Game 4 hoping to eliminate the Red Bull Barakos in the 2006 Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup.

Instead, the Kings met a raging offensive onslaught from the Barakos, who gored Ginebra, 118-97, to equalize the best-of-five quarterfinals series and set up a do-or-die match tomorrow Friday.

On the brink of elimination, Red Bull bounced back with fury as they dominated the game from start to finish, never giving the Kings a chance to take the driver’s seat.

But the biggest factor for the Barakos’ blowout victory was the 1-2-1-1 trapping defense they employed throughout the game, leaving the Kings puzzled and disorganized.

Cyrus Baguio exploded for 11 points in the opening quarter to give Red Bull a commanding 35-19 edge.

When Baguio took a rest, Cebuano Junthy Valenzulea took over the scoring chores for the Barakos as the former Salazar Institute of Technology (SIT) Skyblazer helped Red Bull pad its lead to 60-37 at the bend.

Red Bull’s biggest lead was at the 6:03 mark of the penultimate canto when Rich Alvarez’s basket gave the Barakos a 79-45 spread.

After that, it was smooth sailing for Red Bull as the Kings’ role players, who played a big part in their two wins in the series, failed to hit their marks.

Lordy Tugade was adjudged Best Palyer of the Game after he scattered 19 markers built on a 3-of-4 3-point shooting and 6-of-10 field-goal clip.

Valenzuela added 17 for Red Bull, while Baguio (12 points), Enrico Villanueva (13) and Larry Fonacier (10) were also in double figures.

The Kings, who are plagued by injuries to their key players, were headed by Mark Caguioa, who banged in 39 points, Eric Menk with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Mark Macapagal with 10 points. (JSV)
