Serna: Y speak, Pacman By Roger Serna Sounds and images
If you still recall, I wrote in this column that an exciting event in the local theater scene is going to happen at the end of this month.
That event is the staging of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize Best Drama and 2005 Tony Award Best Play awards winner Doubt with no less than the Cherie Gil essaying a different role, far from the usual roles she had so convincingly played on the wide screen and on television for quite a number of years now, that made her perhaps the most ‘hated’ local thespians by TV watchers and moviegoers.
She’ll be playing the role of a nun this time, Sister Aloysius, a woman with a reputation for tenacity and flinty resolve who, after a time, started to harbor doubts on the nature of a relationship between parish priest Father Flynn and a young black student, and exerted efforts to ferret the truth and eventually trap the young priest.
I won’t dwell much on the details, as that would obviously preempt the entire play. Doubt, the play, is currently running in Manila and will be brought to Cebu by Little Boy Productions for a limited engagement on June 30, July 1 and 2 at the Onstage! Ayala Cinema 1 at the Ayala Center – Cebu.
Aside from Cherie, the other members of the cast are Niccolo Manahan as Father Flynn, Cathy Azanza as Sister James and Jay Glorioso as Mrs. Fuller.
Written by John Patrick Shanley, Doubt is directed by Chari Arespacochaga with Mio Infante as production designer, Jonsy Reyes as lighting director and Hendri Go of Little Boy Productions as producer (for the Cebu stint).

Y Speak host and former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity housemate, and later boarder sa bahay ni Kuya–Bianca Gonzales led the other members of the cast of the show in a luncheon press conference at Table 7 last weekend.
Also there to answer questions from the Cebu press was former Magandang Umaga Pilipinas segment host Ricci Chan who will be seen soon in a telenovela with John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Sam Milby.
JC Cuadrado – Wazzup Wazzup Tadjock winner and currently Studio 23 host of morning show Breakfast, Mhyco Aquino of the dance group Anime and was last seen in the teleseries Gulong ng Palad, and Sergio Garcia (also of Anime) were also there to meet the Cebu press.
Mhyco was quick to dismiss the impression that he is aloof and arrogant explaining that he may look that way but is actually not.
Direk Joel is said to have been very impressed with Echo’s portrayal of the role (including his sacrifices including change of hairstyle, a rigid workout training to achieve a boxer’s physique resembling that of Pacman’s, acquiring an accent and others) that her predicted Echo will be in the running for awards next year.
Playdate of the movie is June 21. That’s this Wednesday already. Yes! Can’t you feel the level of excitement and anticipation rising?
This is one instance when local moviegoers can prove to all and sundry that not only big budgeted Hollywood movies can draw viewers to theaters and moviehouses. It does not hurt to patronize our own products, does it?
