Cebu delegate deplores conduct of PWA elections By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
The recent elections of the Philippine Weightlifting Association (PWA) were not procedural and the cancellation of the national five in one lift fest was unreasonable.
This was the statement of former PWA Secretary General Danilo Catingub, who raised the issue during the elections last Wednesday at the Ultra, which, he said, failed to follow the by-laws of the PWA.
“All members should have elected seven members of the board of trustees through secret balloting or nomination. However, what they did was suggest who will be chairman and president and then had someone second it. It is nowhere near what the by-laws state,” Catingub said.
Catingub said the seven elected members of the board of trustees should have elected among themselves who the officers will be. During the election, three persons were nominated and named vice presidents for Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
“I was not able to contain myself that is why I stood up and questioned them. The other members in the assembly were complaining because they were stripped of the right to take a vote,” Catibgub said.
Amendments
The assembly also decided to amend the by-laws. But Catingub pointed out that the amendments should be done before it is ratified because it still needs to be approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Bacolod City representative Monico Puentevella literally came out uncontested and will serve his fourth straight term as president. Mark Aliño remained chairman of the board.
The vice presidents are Rolando Perez for Luzon, University of San Jose-Recolletos athletic director Disocoro Himotas for the Visayas and Cresenciano Cabanlit for Mindanao. Board members are Israel Gozo, Alfonso Canizares.
Meanwhile, Catingub also took a shot at the PWA for canceling the national weightlifting tournament.
To recall, the PWA canceled the tournament because the Philippine Sports Commission denied its budget request.
“The PWA is very much capable of staging the event because it has more than enough budget,” Catingub said. “I have been with PWA long enough to know that and I know that its bank book has enough cash. We have the most updated liquidation and treasurer’s report among the other NSAs.”
Catingub, the coach of the University of Ceby team, was booted out as PWA secretary general and national head coach last March for no apparent reason, although he has decided to put to rest the issue.
