Townsfolk howl against motel,karaoke bars

More than a hundred residents of Barangay Calajo-an, Minglanilla, Cebu and members of three church-based organizations held a rally in front the municipal building yesterday afternoon to protest the operation of six karaoke bars and a motel in the barangay.

The rallyists said the establishments in Sitio San Pedro have been used as fronts for prostitution and even children could see female workers of the bars kissing and hugging their customers outside.

“Mismo ang mga bata sa amoang pagpangutana nitug-an nga naay kissing, naay magsayaw nga maghubo...unya unsa mana dili ba na law-ay (Even children whom we’ve asked said there was kissing and nude dancing. Now isn’t that lewd?),” said Fr. Peter Simon, one of the rally organizers.

The group from the St. Peter’s Women Association, Calajo-an Women’s Organization and Franciscan Friars of Charity asked the local officials to act to preserve morality in Calajo-an.

Barangay Captain Samuel Sedaño said he was baffled that the bars and the motel managed to operate in Calajo-an when he did not issue them a barangay clearance, a requirement in securing business permit.

Operation of the bars and the motel was made known to local officials last year when Vice Mayor Lani Peña called a meeting in the barangay, together with the chairman and members of the police committee of the Municipal Council.

The meeting focused on the curfew violation of the establishments, which continued to operate beyond midnight. At the height of the discussion, female residents complained of nude shows in the bar.

Peña told Sun.Star Cebu in a mobile interview last night that after learning of the problem, he called up the owners of the bars and the motel, warning them that he will close their operations if they continue to allow nude shows.

“This problem isn’t new. If the lewd acts continue, then we would give importance to public interest,” he said.

He said the council will hold its regular session today, and he will bring the issue for the councilors to decide. (AIV)
