Cokaliong breaks own 3-point record
Long-gunner Chester Cokaliong conjured his old form in shattering two league records in the Cecaba All-Stars’ 103-59 rout of City Sports Club-Sirlitz/Slylark last Sunday in the 2006 Executives Cup basketball tournament.
Cokaliong sank 15 triples for 45 points, erasing the old mark of 44 for most points in a game set by Edwin Banaag of San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association (Scbhaba) against Sacred Heart Alumni Basketball Association (Shaba) last Sept. 6.
3-pointers
Cokaliong, who was named game MVP, had two assists and two rebounds and also broke his own record of nine treys against Liloanon Sports Organization Selection last Sept. 25 with 15 3-pointers this time around.
He netted 18 points in the third quarter on six shots from beyond the arc, including five straight, that gave the Pilipinas Shell-backed Cecaba All-Stars a 75-40 lead. His final 3-pointer of the night gave Cecaba All-Stars their biggest lead at 101-51 with a minute left to play.
No other Cecaba All-Stars player scored in double figures. Stephen Tan finished with eight points but had 10 rebounds, eight assists and two steals.
In the final quarter, Cokaliong was alternately manned by Albert and Wellington Chan Lim but still drilled in four treys for Cecaba All-Stars, which forged a four-way tie on top of the standings with Insular Life, Team Barkada, and Scbhaba, all with 3-1 win-loss cards.
City Sports Club has lost all four of its games.
It was a twin kill for the Easternians as Cecaba Selection-Runway Tires survived, 47-43, over the undermanned Shaba Selection-Cebu Home Builders.
Cecaba Selection capitalized on the absence of Shaba’s top gunners Theogene Lim and Neil Lim. Theogene got married on game day.
Cecaba Selection led, 33-19, at halftime but Shaba pulled to within five points entering the last three minutes. Then Danny Calagos and Rey Kenneth Ng scored on two straight lay-ups to bail Cecaba Selection out of danger and even its record to 2-2. Shaba absorbed its third consecutive defeat after hurdling its season-opening assignment.
