nbaGrapevine: Tete-a-tete with the wife of Terry

MIAMI – While checking out the American Airlines Arena last night, I stumbled into the wife of Mavericks dynamo Jason Terry.

And from the comfort of her Level 121 seat, Johnyika graciously granted Sun.Star Cebu an interview while watching Game 5 and fearing that she “might have a heart attack.”

With Jason soon to be a free agent, she hopes they will stay in Dallas. “Great organization. Great team. And Mark Cuban is a great owner, too.”

I told Johnyika that due to salary cap concerns, the Mavs might not be able to afford her husband’s services. “I hope they can work something out.”

Don’t bet on it, Johnyika. If the Mavs let go of Nash, they can let go of Terry just the same.

Well, what’s the grapevine without the juicy details, eh? So here we go.

Jason and Johnyika met in high school. It was love at first sight, one that has produced three kids. Thanks to a multi-million dollar salary, the Terrys have three homes in Atlanta, Dallas and Seattle.

They have seven cars and Jason likes best his two-door Mercedes Benz the most. Johnyika is partial to her Beamer (slang for BMW), and she also often uses their Cadillac Escalade, an SUV so large you can put a small jet in the trunk.

An NBA player’s salary is paid according to how each player wants it, weekly, twice-weekly or monthly. She said Jason chose to be paid once a month. We know there are six zeroes in Terry’s annual pay but Johnyika wouldn’t say exactly how much. Secret.

“We got out like real folks during the off-season. Jason goes grocery shopping with me and the kids and we hang out in restaurants occasionally,” she said.

Do the fans bother you a lot? I asked. Yes, she replied. “But Jason loves it. He says there is a problem when people don’t recognize an NBA player. The fact that fans talk to him, ask for photographs and autographs means that he is doing something good.”

Good? You kidding me?

Johnyika is too modest. Her husband is breathtakingly awesome in these Finals. He had 32 in Game 1 and 36 in Game. Somewhere in between, he had 16, 17, and 16.

Too bad, the rest of the Mavs are not playing to potential. (HDS)
