askHomer: Answer to a silly question

CHICAGO – In what is thus far the best question I’ve got in these Finals, Giovanni Cortes (GCortes@lear.com) asked: “I wonder why the last play of Miami with 9.1 seconds left in Game 5’s overtime was not called a backcourt violation.

“I observed Wade almost reached the 3-point line of the Dallas halfcourt when he caught the pass. Was it just the design trophy at midcourt that made me think it was a backcourt violation?”

Your eyes weren’t deceiving you, Giovanni. While getting the inbounds pass, Wade did dart from Maimi’s halfcourt to Dallas’ halfcourt. It wasn’t a violation, though.

Under the NBA’s Rule III (The Throw-In), this exception is provided for: “During the last two minutes of the fourth period and in/or overtime period, the ball may be passed anywhere (frontcourt and backcourt) on the court.”

2) Marques Ray Malazarte (mmalazarte@peoplessupport.com): “Is game-fixing real in the NBA? Is it possible to exist on basketball’s greatest stage?”

There is no game-fixing in the NBA, and it will never ever exist in the regular season, the playoffs and the Finals. I hope I don’t have to dignify silly questions like that again.

3) Alfrancis Lopez (depechebox@hotmail.com): “Whose your bet in this Finals?” If you’re asking if I wagered money on it, the reply is no. But I’m pulling for Shaq and the Heat. And if the Mavs win, I won’t cry either.

4) Perseus Manloloyo (mmg.lao@linarco.com: “Down, 3-2, could the Mavs still win the championship?” Yes, playing at home at the American Airlines Center could do wonders for the Mavs. “I hope some home-cooking will help,” said Dallas coach Avery Johnson.

5) Jay Lee (stackjams@yahoo.com): “What happened to Shaq, who used to be the most dominant in the NBA?” Well, he got a little old and tired. And the Mavs kept double-teaming him. Shaq, however, did have 18 points and 12 rebounds in Game 5, which is awesome. (Homer D. Sayson)
