The Cebu City track-and-field team left Monday expecting stiff competition from local and international participants in the National Open Track and Field Championship, which will start tomorrow until June 25 in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija.

Leading the Cebu City bets are 2006 Naga City Palarong Pambansa record-holder Jorge Pinanonang of Bayawan City, now a freshman at the University of Cebu, Kenn Werner Villaruel, Anselmo Esgana, Edward Encontro, Carl Malazarte, Adelio Chiang, Anthony Santillan and Jeppy Lumongsod.

The distaff side is composed of Lera dela Calzada, Irin Baluran, Annabel Nuñez, Sarah Siocon, Christy Sevilleno, Eden Dampios, Lyle Larida, Angela Labajo and Zerly Tuling.

Malaysian bets

The young Cebuano trackstars will be up against veteran national team athletes, including Cebu’s Rosel Paculaba.

Also set to compete is the Malaysian team, which became the first foreign team to confirm its participation.

The Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union is sending seven male and five female Class “A” athletes led by top sprinter Narendran Shanmuganathan, who will compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs.

The Malaysian delegation is headed by Lt. Col. Hamid Barkat and coached by Harun Rasheed A.K.M.Athuman, Manshabar Abd Jalil and Russian Yuri Satnikov.

“We are still awaiting confirmations from Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei. We are expecting they will send their lineup next week,” said athletics chief Go Teng Kok of the regular SEA competitors in the National Open.
