nbaGrapevine: Unmasking Williams’ Adidas 1; Yoga with Zo

CHICAGO – I was among a group of reporters who gathered around Jason Williams after a Heat team practice when a Japanese reporter, his eyes glowing with awe, asked Jason: “Is that an Adidas 1 you’re wearing?”

“Yes, they sent it to me,” Williams replied. “Do you have an endorsement deal with Adidas?” I probed. “No, but I’m glad I don’t have to pay for this shoe. I heard it’s expensive,” he said.

After that brief shoe inquisition, I did an extensive research and found out that the Adidas 1 just came out on the market last April 26. According to Frank Bajak of the Associated Press, Adidas engineers spent three years developing the sneakers in secrecy at the company’s headquarters in Portland.

With a price tag of $250, the Adidas 1 was originally designed for marathon runners and it contains “a microprocessor capable of making five million calculations per second. A magnetic sensor in the shoe’s heel measures its compression on impact, taking 1,000 readings per second.”

In simple terms, therefore, the shoe is about cushioning. And for a player such as Jason Williams, whose knees are soaked with tendinitis, it is a perfect fit.

YOGA. To help with his flexibility, especially after being diagnosed with a kidney ailment last October 2000, 6-foot-10 Heat center Alonzo Mourning has practiced yoga.

“It’s very relaxing. Once your body gets adapted to it, it helps train your breathing. I’ve got so many things working against me internally that I’ve got to do so many things outside to help me balance that out,” Zo told Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Ex-Celtics center Robert Parish introduced Zo to yoga when both played together for the Charlotte Hornets in the 1993-94 season. Homer D. Sayson
