PWA lashes back at critics, ex-official By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
Phillipine Weightlifting Association released a statement saying that allegations by former PWA official Danilo Catingub’s statements about the the organization are uncalled for.
“We were very much surprised with his statements because the meeting actually went smoothly. There were no dissenting votes and no objections were raised,” Dullano said, adding that they even earned the praises of representative of the Philippine Olympic Committee, who attended the general assembly and electoral congress last June 14.
Last week, Catingub, a former PWA secretary general, said the election for a new set of members of the board was “not procedural and that the cancellation of the national five-in-one liftfest was not necessary.”
Catingub had pointed out that the election did not follow the procedures provided for by the association’s by-laws since no secret balloting nor voting was done. Instead, there were motions to place people in certain positions that were then duly seconded.
Admitted
Dullano admitted in a press statement that it was indeed the process done but the decision was unanimously approved by the general assembly and as such, the latter may “new rules or procedures it deems necessary and reasonable and thereby overriding what is provided under the by-laws as long as it is adapted by the members in a meeting constituting a quorum.”
“We are saddened because he (Catingub) did not raise these concerns during the assembly,” Dullano said. Catingub, in an earlier interview, said he tried to reason out with the group but his contentions fell on deaf ears.
With regards to the cancellation of the national tournament, Dullano maintains that the reason for it is the disapproval of budget from the Philippine Sports Commission.
Catibgub had said the PWA need not wait for the budget from the PSC because it could afford to stage the national tournament from its own coffers. The tournament is crucial for choosing the lifters, who will make up the national team. The players will be sent to train abroad in preparation for the Asian Games at the end of the year.
“Ever since, PSC bankrolls for the event. The PSC is having problems of its own that is why it still could not hand us the financial assistance that we ask for,” Dullano said.
With the national budget still dangling at congress and senate comes the suspension of the PSC budget, leading to the failure of PSC to lend a helping hand to the NSAs.
Budget
“If the 2005 budget is reenacted, we will reschedule the tournament tentatively in October and it will be in Bacolod,” said Dullano.
In place for the cancelled tournament, the PWA will hold national tryouts instead. There will be three trials done in Luzon, Central Visayas and Mindanao. The Visayas leg will be this weekend at the Baseline Restaurant, where it is expected to draw lifters from the entire region.
“The athletes have trained hard and we don’t want that to go to waste,” said Dullano.
