Talk back: He was not arrested By Sgt. Mitch R. Cui, PAFR
Please make the necessary corrections in the news story “CIDG cops dispute woman driver’s rap” that came out in your paper on June 22, 2006 (page A14).
The story states that:
“Among them were two men Bontuyan and Dacalos have arrested for alleged possession of firearms. Bontuyan and Dacalos identified the two as Ryan Mendoza and Renan Castrodes…The arrest of the two men was reported and recorded in the blotter of the Mabolo Police Station, Bontuyan and Dacalos said.”
To put the record straight, SPO1 Delfin Bontuyan never arrested Adrian Francis Cui (identified as Ryan Mendoza by Bontuyan).
Mendoza voluntarily appeared before the Mabolo Police Station upon the invitation of a policeman from the Mobile Patrol Group to show the necessary documents (licenses and permits) of the firearm that was in his possession.
The blotter at the Mabolo Police Station states:
“At 3:45 a.m. on June 18, 2006, Sgt. Adrian Francis Cui was brought to this office by MPG, presumed for having in his possession a .38 caliber pistol with nine (9) live ammunitions. At this station, subject PAF personnel presented complete documents for the firearm, (which was) properly returned to Sgt. Adrian Francis Cui.”
Therefore, Bontuyan would be lying if he claims that he arrested Mendoza.
On the part of the reporter who wrote the story, she should have checked the records if these coincided with the claim of her news source.
In this case, she did not and that makes her news story inaccurate. It’s amazing how your reporter would take someone’s word hook, line and sinker.
Is it not the job of a reporter to double-check if the claim of his/her news source is true?
Bontuyan should have been asked to prove his claim, and in this case, it is his word against the records at the Mabolo Police Station.
