Z to defend OPBF title in RP

Z “THE Dream” Gorres will defend his Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super-flyweight belt before challenging for a world title.

Gorres, who beat Waengpetch Chuwatana last March 19 for the vacant title, will make his first defense of the WBC-affiliated OPBF belt in August.

“We are yet to confirm the exact date and opponent but for sure Gorres will have his first title defense here,” said ALA Boys manager Antonio Lopez Aldeguer. The fight will be either in Cebu or in Manila.

Gorres is fresh off a dominating 100-87 win over Pedro Rincon Miranda in Carson City, California last May 27, where he scored four knockdowns over the durable Colombian.

That was the first match of Gorres’ five-fight deal with Golden Boy Promotion signed in Cebu City last March 17. Part of the deal will have Gorres fight for a world title.

“I don’t know what will be next for Gorres, maybe the world title. That is part of our deal with Golden Boy Promotions to have this boy fight for a world title but I can’t say anything about that for now since we still don’t know what the plans of the promoters are,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.

Gorres, who holds a 24-1-1 win-loss-draw record with 12 wins by knockout, is currently the WBC No.10, WBA No.14, IBF No.8 and WBO No.1 contender.

Since his next defense is “choice,” his camp is looking for a Korean contender in the 115-pound division.

According to the recent ratings of the OPBF, Jung Kwan Kim is the lone Korean contender to Gorres’ title. Kim is the Korean super-flyweight champion. He is ranked No.4. The boxrec.com website gives his record as 6-7-1.

Kim lost to Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista by split decision on May 29, 2004. He also suffered a first- round TKO defeat to Randy Mangubat in their WBC International flyweight title match in October 2000. (RCM)
