Cesafi commissioner seeks bigger crowds
By Marian C. Baring

FOR his second term as the commissioner of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc., Felix Tiukinhoy, appointed only last week, will continue the task that he had always wanted for the league – bigger crowds at the games.

The Cesafi, unlike its counterparts in Manila, does not have impressive ticket sales, except during the finals and only for top teams. Teams do not have the huge following compared to the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines or National Collegiate Athletic Association.

“You will see the fan base of the teams in the NCAA and UAAP. Students and alumni are very supportive of their teams. I want to hype up the games and make the students from the member schools aware that they have a team and that they should support them,” Tiukinhoy said.

He also said he is urging schools to impress among the students the importance of supporting their teams.

“It is also one way of egging their players to do good,” Tiukinhoy said.

As has been practiced before, to get more students to troop to the venue, ticket prices for lower-box seats are cut by half but students need only to present their identification cards and they can get into the general admission area for free.

Marketing team

Also, Tiukinhoy will once more revive the marketing team to help him drum up more support from the private sector and entice more people to watch the games, as he did while being commissioner in the 2003-2004 season.

At that time, Tiukinhoy managed to tap one of the major telecom companies as a tournament sponsor and had one local television station cover the more important games. Freebies were given out during timeouts to the audience, while prizes were given to winners in every sport.

“We are now in the middle of negotiations with potential corporate sponsors, who we are positive are willing to help us,” he said.

The 2006 Cesafi season opens on July 25 at the Cebu Coliseum.
