Real-Life couple rules By Jaime A. Frias ii Sun.Star Correspondent
Timothy Abay and Yanyan Saluria got for themselves an early wedding gift.
The couple, representing the Aboitiz Group of Companies, played in perfect harmony with their respective teammates to sweep the coveted titles and most valuable player (MVP) awards in the HSBC Commercial Group Badminton Commercial Doubles Tournament yesterday at the Metrosports.
Abay and Saluria, who will exchange vows in August, won in their respective events, which earned them the MVP trophies.
Abay and officemate Dante Naga defeated Aldrin Acedillo and Marlou Pandan of Lexmark International Philippines Inc., 11-15, 15-11, 15-12, in a thrilling Men’s Doubles finals, while Saluria and Luz Salameda beat Grace Mercado and Ma. Fe Cuambot of Intaq Inc., 15-13, 15-11, in the Women’s Doubles finals.
Abay, who suffered leg cramps in a first-set loss, unleashed powerful smashes in the second and in the last sets to match the drives of the Lexmark duo.
Inspired
“(Despite the leg cramps) I just went on with the attack, while my partner Dante defended the net,” said Abay, who was inspired by the presence of her soon-to-be-bride Yanyan.
The Aboitiz tandem raced to an 11-2 run and then staved off a spirited rally to claim the title.
“We ran out of stamina after a good start,” said Acedillo.
The champion tandems received P4,000 each, while the runners-up received P2,000 apiece.
