PRO 7 to conduct gun safety seminars for police

AFTER learning that some police personnel were involved in accidental firing of issued firearms, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 is directing all police office directors to schedule gun safety seminars for their personnel.

This, as PRO 7 Director Silverio Alarcio Jr. plans to bring back the shooting competition started by then PRO 7 director Avelino Razon Jr.

In a memorandum dated June 19, Regional Operations and Plans Division Chief Carmelo Valmoria directed provincial and city directors, as well as the Regional Mobile Group, to remind their personnel to “take extra caution and exercise/practice safe gun handling procedures and responsible gun ownership.”

Precaution

This is to avoid accidents that have injured or killed fellow police officers and innocent civilians.

Earlier this month, a jeepney driver was wounded on both legs after a policewoman’s gun went off.

PO3 Raquel Camay was in the front seat of a jeepney headed for Labangon when her .45 pistol, which was inside her bag, went off.

Driver Christopher Escolar was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center after a single bullet wounded both his legs.

Last February, SPO4 Grace Retuya was killed when the gun of PO3 Rogelio Castañeda accidentally went off when he adjusted its hammer.

Planned tilt

Castañeda is facing a case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.

Valmoria directed police office directors to coordinate with his office for availability of an instructor to conduct the seminar in all city and municipal police stations.

Aside from a region-wide PNP shooting competition, Alarcio also wants plans for a competition on civil disturbance management (CDM) and Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) among PRO 7 units.

The CDM manages unruly crowds during protest rallies while Swat is called on for special cases. (MEA)
