Students’ safety first: official to schools, LGUs

A LOCAL lawmaker is calling on all principals and school heads to find ways to ensure the safety of students in their schools.

This after a study showed that among 3,000 children who have suffered injuries, about half of them were hurt by road accidents.

Cebu Provincial Board Member Victor Maambong drafted this resolution because of the study conducted by Safe Kids Philippines, a non-government organization, which reported that among 3,000 children who have suffered injuries, 56 percent of them were hurt by road accidents primarily involving bicycles, motorcycles and tricycles.

Around 98 percent of the respondents were pedestrians aged six and older, which is the age range of students.

“It is imperative that school principals and heads must formulate and implement measures to ensure safety of students,” he said.

In this relation, Maambong drafted another resolution requesting road maintenance division chiefs and engineering chiefs of the different municipalities and cities of the Province to inspect and maintain proper road safety signs at near school campuses of all schools in the province.

He said the study of Safe Kids Philippines showed that a number of roads leading to schools are not safe enough for kids and students.

“One of the ways to ensure road safety, especially for kids and students, is to place and maintain road safety signs near school campuses,” he added.

Maambong is also requesting the punong barangay of the Province of Cebu to assign some of their tanods near public school premises to help ensure safety of students.

Maambong’s resolutions will be tackled tomorrow during the regular session. (MBG)
