Cebu bets close out with 4 By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
TEAM Cebu City’s differently-able tankers won four more gold medals as the First Philippine Olympic Festival Swimming Competition wrapped up yesterday at the Trace Aquatic Center in Los Baños, Laguna.
With bemedaled coach Rolando Alvarez warming the bench because of his injury, Noel Gonzales stepped up to lead the Cebuanos’ impressive campaign as he collected two gold medals on top of his two top finishes Saturday.
Gonzales, an orthopedic who belongs to the S-7 classification, ruled the 50-meter butterfly and 50m backstroke events.
The other two golds for the day came from Hilario Romano and paralympian Arnold Balais.
Balais dominated the 50m butterfly of the S-9 qualification. He later finished second in the 50m backstroke for his team’s lone silver for the day.
Romano topped the 50m backstroke of the S-11 qualification.
All in all, the team went home with nine golds and four silver medals.
On Saturday, Gonzales and Balais captured two gold medals each, winning the breaststroke and freestyle events of their respective classifications, while Romano had one gold and one silver medal.
Alvarez finished with two silver medals.
