Martus 3rd in nat’l. scrabble finals first leg; Alagaban 4th

CEBUANOS Teodoro Martus Jr. and Orville James Alagaban landed third and fourth, respectively, in the first leg of the 2006 National Scrabbles Championships yesterday in Taytay, Rizal.

The 20-year-old Martus, an Industrial Engineering student of the University of Visayas (UV), tallied 10 wins but absorbed a 398-445 defeat in the penultimate round at the hands of Quezon City’s Henry Pacifico, the RP No.27 who secured second place with 11 points and a 242 spread.

Ronald Credo ruled the first leg with 11 wins and a 622 spread.

The UV standout bounced back and defeated Philippine No.1 Odette Carmina Rio of Iloilo City, 509-338, in the last round.

Martus, fourth in the Philippine rankings, had the best spread of 984 in the King of the Hill format.

Lesser spread

“Had I won my penultimate round match, I could have been the champion,” said Martus. “I miscalculated my tiles in the middle part of the game against Pacifico.”

Talisay City’s Alagaban, a UV alumnus, also scored 10 wins but had only a 587 spread.

The 23-year-old Alagaban, who is ranked seventh in the Philippines, beat TJ de Jesus, 467-351, in the final round.

Earlier, Alagaban absorbed two straight defeats, including one from RP No.11 Oscar Rivera of Manila.

“It’s not yet too late. There are three legs remaining,” said Alagaban, who thanked the Talisay City Government for its support.

The UV alumni organization also supported Alagaban and Martus in their campaign, whose performance was praised by Cebu Scrabble Club president Avelino Guatno.

The second of the four-leg leg series will be in September in Baguio City. (JAF)
