Negros Top team rules By Jaime A. Frias II Sun.Star Correspondent
NEGROS Top Team’s Paul Gutierrez submitted Ranie “The Rock” Ballesta of Comjukai Aikijutsu in the 155-pound mixed-martial-art main event of Only the Strong Survive 4 Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum. Two of Gutierrez’s teammates also won their bouts while another had a draw.
The 23-year-old Gutierrez took down Ballesta with a double-leg grab after a striking it out in the first few seconds of round one. Gutierrez eventually had a full mount on Ballesta but the Comjukai grappler reversed. Gutierrez countered with a reverse of his own for another full mount and landed a solid right-hand pound on in Ballesta’s face.
Gutierrez faked a punch and as Ballesta held up his hands to protect his face, Gutierrez caught Ballesta’s left arm and fell on his back with an armbar, which forced a submission victory in the first two minutes of the match.
“I psyched him out with the fake and saw him hold up his hands then I did the armbar,” said Gutierrez, a nursing graduate of Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. “What I did I saw in the Ultimate Fighting Championships.”
Among the featured matches, Dennis Retada, also of Negros Top Team, had an easy win against Jason Soquite of Durex Dragon in the 140lb division by technical knockout as Soquite gave up.
While Negros Top Team’s Magz Gonzales dominated his three-round fight against Hilarion Ignacio of Comjukai Aikijutsu in the 120lb division but had to settle for a draw as the tournament rules that without a submission, knockout or disqualification, the fight will be declared a draw.
MMA vs. taekwondo
Gonzales’ Negros Top Team teammate Gian Bicuña won also by armbar over taekwando jin Michael Bacalso in their 130lb fight. Bicuña slammed Bacalso and punched him out to force a submission.
Cito Gesta Jr. of C-Mac Main, a muay Thai stylist and a professional boxer, unleashed powerful punches to knock out Alex Rojo of Durex Dragon in the 120lb category.
Franz Visaya, a taekwondo jin and karateka, submitted to Paping Verdida of C-Mac Ultimate during the second-round break in their 132lb bout. Verdida took control of the whole match, mounting Visaya most of the time.
Albert Estomago of C-Mac Main armlocked Jomar Valendez of Durex Dragon in the second round of their 119lb duel and made him submit.
Victorio Catubig of C-Mac Main made Jerome Torbiso of Durex Dragon submit via ankle lock in their 138lb match. Torbiso took down Catubig but the latter quickly recovered, got back on his feet and took down Torbiso and got the submission win while Torbiso was on the ground.
Danilo Teves of Calma-Espia cut Gomer Meñoza of C-Mac Bullet in the left side of the face but their 120lb match was declared a draw.
Jonathan Relatado won over Arnold Villanueva by technical knockout in the 119lb contest.
Catalino Limpangog of Durex Dragon lost to Demetrio dela Torre of C-MAC Bullet in their 119lb fight via guillotine choke.
Cebu City Councilor Pax Pacaña handed the trophies to the winners.
