Rojas makes RP lifting team; Rosas shatters national record
YOUNG and promising lifter Kelly Kaye Rojas prevailed over her older counterparts in the National Weightlifting Tryouts last Saturday at the Baseline Gym to earn a slot in the national youth team.
The 17-year-old Rojas, of the University of Cebu (UC) weightlifting team, topped the Women’s 48-kilogram division after completing a 115kg total lift. Rojas’ best lifts were 50kg in snatch and 65kg in the clean and jerk.
Rojas outclassed 24-year-old veteran Adelle Lobite of Baseline Weightlifting Club, who only managed 42.5kg in the snatch and 55kg in clean and jerk.
Candidate
Taking third place was Nevan Castañares of Barangay Pasil, who had a total lift of 70kg.
Rojas becomes an automatic candidate to represent the country in the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship on July 25.
Also stealing the limelight was another UC stalwart, Emily Rosas, who crushed a national record held by Zamboanga’s Hedelyn Diaz.
Rosas now holds a national record in the Women’s 53kg weight class with a 70kg lift in the snatch and 87.5kg in the clean and jerk for a total lift of 157.5kg. She improved the clean and jerk by 2.5kg, while improving the snatch record by 5kg.
Winners
Other women’s competition winners: Evan Gicain (58kg Open Sr.); Julie Ann Dumandan (63kg Women), Shara Bolivides (+75kg Juniors); Mercy Lendio (44kg Junior); Antonietta Castañares (40kg Youth).
Men’s winners: Lester Espinosa (46kg Youth); Richmond Valencia (50kg Youth); Martin Patiño (62kg Juniors); Evan Philip Catingub (77kg Youth), Joselito Padilla (94kg Open); Ray Jefferson Querubin (+105kg Juniors).
National coach Mon Solis said they will choose from the winners those who will make it to the national team. Solis will be in Zamboanga City on July 1-2 for the Mindanao leg of the tryouts. (MCB)
