San Miguel evens series

THE San Miguel Beermen evened the best-of-seven semifinals series to two games apiece yesterday after they clobbered the Red Bull Barakos, 106-82, in Game 4 of the Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Danny Seigle, who scored 24 points and 10 rebounds on a 10-of-18 field goal shooting, led six other Beermen who finished in double-digit scores including Dondon Hontiveros, who had 17, Dorian Peña, who had 16, and Danny Ildefonso, who finished with 14.

Seigle, who recorded his 16th consecutive 20-plus game, was awarded the Best Player of the Game accolade.

In a battle marred by a near walkout by the Barakos in the second period, the Beermen proved steadier in the end as they stepped on the gas pedal in the final canto to break away after a close first three periods.

Head to the dugout

With 2:06 left in the second canto, Red Bull’s Cyrus Baguio was called for a foul against Dondon Hontiveros with San Miguel leading, 41-32. After the call, Barakos coach Yeng Guiao called for a timeout and then ordered his team to proceed to the dugout.

Officials slapped Red Bull with two technical fouls for delaying the game, while a hefty fine was expected had Red Bull decided not to return to the game.

In Game 6 of the 1990 First Conference Finals against Shell, Robert Jaworki’s Anejo Rhum staged a walkout, the first in the league’s 31-year history. The team was meted a P550,000 fine.

Resumption

Red Bull, which complained of receiving the raw end of the calls from the referees, returned to the court three minutes later.

When the game resumed, the Beermen continued to control the tempo and finished the half ahead, 45-40.

San Miguel increased its edge to 11, 73-62, at the end of the penultimate canto and gradually pushed the gas pedal in the final period as it erected its biggest lead, 102-73, after a basket from Ildefonso with still 2:56 left in the game.
