TAGBILARAN City claimed its second overall title in the 21st Visayas Inter-City Developmental Amateur Boxing Championship by winning five gold medals, a silver and a bronze yesterday in Maasin City.

“It’s a fitting gift to the city. We won the title in time for our Charter Day celebration,” said Meloy Monton, the head of the Tagbilaran City delegation, referring the 40th Charter Day Anniversary of Tagbilaran on July 1, which will be celebrated today.

Seven-time champion Mandaue City finished as first runner-up with a gold and three silvers, while 12-time champion Cebu City wound up as second runner-up with a gold and two silvers.

Tagbilaran sent six of its seven boxers to the finals, while Mandaue had five and Cebu City three.

Cebu City could have placed second but its best bet Jestoni Borres, who automatically marched into the finals after getting the lucky draw, lost to Mandaue’s Edcel Mike Tuñacao in the 45-kilogram gold-medal bout.

Tagbilaran won all of its finals bouts against Mandaue. Melvin Besinga beat Jerel Flores by Referee Stop Contest-Outclass (RSC-O) in the third round in the 32kg championship, Jinno Cabugngan (34kg) dominated Gerald Suico, 4-1, and Jefferson Riodique (36kg) won via RSC-Compulsory Count Limit in the third round over Antonio Calida.

Other Tagbilaran fighters who won golds were Noel Adelmita (40kg), a 5-0 winner over Ricky Nuñez and Wilbeth Loberanis (42kg) over Apolinario Chavez of Cebu City, 4-1.

Cebu City’s lone gold came from Donald Tubod, who had a tough time disposing of Tagbilaran’s Joshua Odtojan, 3-2, in the 38kg division final. Tubod was named Best Boxer of the tournament.
