Transco replaces old wood poles in Visayas
The National Transmission Corp. (Transco) has intensified the replacement of wood poles with steel poles to bolster the reliability of its sub-transmission lines nationwide.
In the Visayas, a total of 524 steel poles have been allocated in the four districts of the region for the first batch with 157 allotted for Panay; 67 for Cebu and Bohol; 209 for Leyte and Samar and 91 for the provinces of Negros Occidental and Oriental Negros.
Leyte and Samar have been apportioned the highest number of steel poles among the four districts in the Visayas because they are typhoon-prone areas, it was noted.
Damage
Wood poles that are no longer serviceable—due to wear and tear, deterioration and decay, and are damaged or destroyed—have been prioritized for replacement with steel poles, based on the criteria for disposal, according to the state firm.
As of last month, a total of 153 steel poles have been installed in the entire region distributed: 48 in Panay;18 in Cebu and Bohol; 57 in Leyte and Samar and 30 in Negros Island.
There are still 371 steel poles in the inventory for the first batch, which have been scheduled to gradually replace wood poles that are already in a state of disrepair or are no longer useful.
Transco said it has earmarked for replacement wood poles with steel poles because the latter are proven to be more durable and have longer lifespan of serviceability and utility. (PR)
