Malilong: Plot to kill Val By Frank Malilong Jr. The Other Side
NAGA mayor Valdemar Chiong has been in office for barely two months and some people already want him dead?
Why should anyone want to kill Val? I did some police work last night (I am a policeman’s son, remember?) and came up with three angles that I think the investigators should pursue.
One: his Christian name. Valdemar is not only difficult to pronounce, it is also foreign-sounding. It is possible that the plot to eliminate Val was hatched in patriotic ardor by those who rightly believe that love of country is served by using Tagalog names such as Domeng or Igme. The Ludendorffs, the Merediths and the Nebuchadnezzars better be cautious. They could be on the cross hair of our local Klu Klux Klan, too.
Two: his tennis. The Naga mayor has a mean forehand to complement a deceptive backhand. He also teases his opponents like Balut, July, Tibong and Cesar on and off the court. He was also heard describing as “kuryoso” a former teammate in a tournament in Iloilo.
One thing doesn’t match though: if envy of ability is a motive for killing a tennis player, why are the likes of John Pages, June San Juan and Ronnie Catipay still around, blowing opponents off the court with reckless abandon?
Three: his looks. Val is good-looking although I may be biased because he is my friend. But as a female tennis player once swore before she left for Switzerland, Val has a presence that excites and, although perhaps unintentionally, infuriates jealous boyfriends.
If this theory is correct, then many of my friends are in danger. Boy Chiong, Gilbert Woolbright, Felix Chan, Alvin Suarez, Pepe Aranas and yes, Bobby Nalzaro should consider seeking police protection. I wanted to include another good-looking friend but Vic Loot doesn’t need police protection because he is the police.
Again, I would like to emphasize that mine are just theories. They may sound strange but what is stranger than texting the police in Manila about a plot to kill some people, one of whom lives and holds office nearby?
To quote Val again, “pagka-daghang kuryoso ning kalibutana.” *** Seriously now, isn’t a revered tradition in Congress to observe a moratorium on attacks against President Arroyo while she is abroad? Although unwritten, the rule has been followed for generations on the well-grounded principle that when you embarrass your Chief of State before his/her hosts, you embarrass the whole nation.
I don’t care if they impeach Mrs. Arroyo but could the opposition have waited until she had returned from her strip to the Vatican before they filed their impeachment complaint? Were they scared that Oliver Lozano would jump the gun on them again and file a complaint that is doomed to fail from the very beginning?
