RP champ gets boom's place By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista is definitely out of the July 2 “Mano-A-Mano: Pilipinas Contra Mexico” card at the Araneta Coliseum.
However, Felix Alejandro Montiel may find replacement Michael Domingo of the SGG Stable a worthy opponent in their 10-round non-title duel.
In a related development, World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific super-featherweight champion Czar Amonsot, who replaced Randy Suico in the same card, got the green light to fight Mexican Sergio Ortiz, who earlier refused to fight the left-handed replacement fighter from the ALA Boy Gym.
“Yes, it was confirmed. Amonsot will fight in the card after Sergio Ortiz finally agreed to fight,” said ALA Boys manager Antonio Lopez Aldeguer.
Domingo, the Philippine bantamweight champion, was endorsed by his manager Sammy Gello-ani to replace Bautista, who has been forced to withdraw from the card after contacting bacterial flu last Sunday.
Bautsita is recuperating at the Cebu Doctors Hospital.
“This is a big gamble for my part. But I believe Domingo is a worthy opponent since he is the sparring partner of Bautista and he has learned a lot from Bautista,” Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu.
Breakthrough
Domingo, who his a 20-12-3 win-loss-draw record with seven wins by knockout, is scheduled to defend his Philippine 118-pound belt against Johnny Lear on July 15 in Alabang.
“Since he came into our camp, Domingo won all of his fights,” said Gello-ani. “It’s a pity he accumulated losses when he was still under his former manager in Davao. I have high hopes for him and I know he could give a good performance.
“This could be a breakthrough in his career and I know he could deliver a good fight. Montiel is in big trouble.”
Domingo won the slot over Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation bantamweight champion Malcolm Tuñacao and Paba Youth featherweight champion Bernabe Concepcion.
Known for his impenetrable defense, Domingo is one of eight boxers training at the ALA Gym considered by Gello-ani to be booked for a US fight.
Worthy
Domingo may not be in the caliber of Bautista but Gello-ani is confident that his ward could make the country proud.
“Bautista’s absence in this card has a huge effect to the public because he was among boxers the Filipino fight fans are looking forward to. But I can assure them Domingo is a worthy replacement,” Gello-ani said.
Montiel, 51-7 with 32 KOs, will arrive at 10 tonight from Mexico via Japan.
Meanwhile, World Boxing Council super-featherweight champion Manny Pacquiao and Mexican Oscar Larios, the protagonists in the main event, both chose to wear the the Cleto Reyes gloves, known as the “puncher’s gloves,” for their fight.
