Toral: Focus, be competitive, shamelessly promote By Janette Toral Digital Filipino
Since I started the DigitalFilipino podcast (http://digitalfilipino.pod-omatic.com), I realized how young the podcasting market still is as very few are capable of releasing programs on a consistent schedule.
Here are a few things to remember. Having a focus in your content is important so that you will not run out of things to talk about. If it is meant to generate revenue, seeing growth and income can boost one’s motivation further.
The lack of focus is a major mistake by a lot of websites today. Some get carried away by taking in suggestions that is not supportive of the site’s main purpose.
For instance, if my site’s purpose is to generate revenue for a specific product or encourage members in a campaign, it is important that I minimize any distraction that will stop a site visitor from doing what I want them to do.
Talking and listening to your site visitor is important for as long as they are on your side and are knowledgeable on the subject at hand.
As the Internet is global in nature, one goal that came to mind is earning international recognition through it. Last week, I was surprised I received a newsgroup email from TechPodcasts.com informing me the DigitalFilipino podcast has been accepted in the community.
We are the first Filipino podcast accredited by the said site. Techpodcasts.com is a community that supports Internet-based communication initiatives of its membership, supporting a wide variety of content related to technology subjects. It also intends to pursue opportunities, both commercial and cooperative, to benefit its members.
From July 1 to 15, you can expect me campaigning as well for votes in the People’s Choice Podcast Awards at www.podcastawards.com. To be able to join the competition, a podcast must be existent before May 1, 2006 and has produced at least eight episodes before July 1.
I’m not sure how many Filipino podcasts will be able to meet such requirement. However, on my part, I’m quite determined in joining the said competition and I am prepared to gather the necessary votes. It is also a great excuse to do some shameless self-promotion.
The awards ceremony of the competition will take place at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo, Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California on Sept. 29 to 30.
The great thing about joining communities and competition is that it pushes you to be competitive. But not winning should not be treated as a loss. The free promotion you gained can go a long way whether you win or lose. This is especially so if you make yourself a worthy opponent.
If you are determined to promote yourself or business, but have limited resources, I encourage you to get the book “Confessions of Shameless Self-Promoters,” by Debbie Allen. I’m nearly half-way with the book as of this writing and have picked up ideas already to promote BeadClubPhilippines.com. I’m sure you will too.
