Speak out: Questionable figures
By Rogelio C. Yaun
Manager, Administrative Department
Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority

This is in reaction to an article entitled “MCIAA posts P3.5B income” that came out on page A12 of the June 27 issue of Sun.Star Cebu.

It is not true that the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) earned an income of P3.5 billion from January to May this year.

Neither did MCIAA post a P2.97 billion income for the same period last year or P7.37 billion for the entire 2005.

MCIAA also did not earn an annual income of P6.82 billion in 2004.

In fact, MCIAA’s annual income has never reached P1 billion for the last 15 years of its existence.

Officials and employees of MCIAA were therefore puzzled as to where Airport General Manager Adelberto Yap got his multi-billion figures.

Records at the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) show that MCIAA`s total income for 2005 was only around P800 million.

From January to May this year, its income has only been P356 million, per information from the MCIAA accounting division.
The figures were even lesser in 2004.

I am writing this to dispel the impression that MCIAA might be evading taxes by under-declaring its actual income before the BIR.

While increased income is good for MCIAA’s image, using questionable figures should not be resorted to as a public relations tool.
