Cecaba All-Stars dump Club Monday

The Pilipinas Shell-backed Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) All-Stars kept their sizzling streak with a 99-69 massacre of Club Monday-Gatorade to grab the solo lead in the 2006 Executives Cup basketball tournament on Tuesday at the City Sports Club Cebu gym.

Wielding anew his soft shooting touch, Chester Cokaliong fired seven 3-pointers on the way to a 21-point finish, while Wilson Yu had his finest game of the season with 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists as the Cecaba stars took the number one spot with a 5-1 win-loss card.

MVP

Man-mountain Richard Yu also had 17 markers on top of six rebounds, four assists and two steals, but it was the versatile guard Joel Chan who copped the game-MVP honors with just a rebound shy from a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, and five steals.

The Cecaba All-Stars raced to a 16-point edge at halftime, 49-33. Cokaliong had another third-quarter rampage, hitting 4-of-5 from the 3-point land to pad the All-Stars’ lead to 21, 73-52, entering the final canto.

The Cecaba All-Stars formally knocked the lights off Club Monday via a 26-17 blow for their fifth straight victory after a frustrating loss to Jaycees Basketball Association in the season-opener.

The All-Stars, however, rose from the ashes of that defeat in style, devouring their next five opponents by a remarkable 31.8-point winning margin.

Andres Seno Jr topscored with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists and steals each, while Demosthenes Alfeche added 14 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists for Club Monday, which fell to 3-3. It was not all jubilation for the Easternians as in the second game, the Springdale PTA-Pepsi Max breathe fire all throughout the match to beat the Cecaba Selection, 84-68.

Peter Sta. Maria had 24 points, nine rebounds and six steals, while Chris Sta. Maria added 21 points and 14 rebounds for Sprindale PTA, which kept the CECABA selection at bay after mounting a 46-31 edge at halftime on the way to improving its record to 2-3 in a tie with its victim.

Philip Lim had a career-high 26 points on top of four steals, three rebounds and two assists, but got only help from Rey Kenneth Ng with 14 points and seven rebounds.
