Chiongbian: Granada’s forfeiture of a BIG four-peat By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
HICKORY Dickory Duck, the mouse ran up the clock, the clock struck one the mouse ran down, and then Manning Granada won the Golfer of the Year title in the Business in Golf (BIG) tournament, again.
With his latest win last weekend, many golfers were saying that Granada should be inducted in the Hall of Fame and possibly retire from the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industries competition. I didn’t see the reason until I heard that Granada has won this title three times already and if not for being out of the country last year, he would have easily won, too.
That would have been a four-peat as BIG’s Golfer of the Year. And what was the clamor of the Cebu Chamber golfers? “No four-peats, just forfeits!” So guys let’s make a mock-up Hall of Fame awarding and ask Granada to donate four lechons at the veranda.
Proving everybody right, he trounced the competition, again and won the Senior’s Division with a net 68 in the CCC monthly medal tournament. Knowing Manning, I will say that his timing is always very good. His game peaks at the very ripe, right time. This proves that timing is everything, even in your swing!
So guys not to worry, he is not eligible for the Golfer of the Year in the Copa de Golf but watch out for his team as he will surely put in some big numbers. By the way, at last count, the number of teams who will play in the Copa de Golf is approaching 60. The tournament starts tomorrow at CCC and the awarding ceremony will be at Casino Español at 6:30 p.m.
At stake are four team winners and one individual champion, who must be a Casino Español member. Three hole-in-one prizes on each of the Par 3s will earn you either a KIA Pecanto car, a Skygo motorcycle or a flat screen Phillips TV, depending on which hole you make it in. That’s twelve chances for a hole-in-one. Everyone will go home with an umbrella and a bottle of wine.
The motorcycle will be raffled off if not won in the hole-in-one, along with two flat screen TVs, two domestic PAL roundtrip tickets and many more major prizes. The wine will be given at the awarding dinner so you will be guaranteed a smashing time while listening and dancing to the Bloomfields, who will be playing songs of the Beatles, the Beachboys, etc. If you haven’t had fun this year yet, this is your chance. Bring the wife or a special friend or better still, bring the family.
Congratulations to the CCC monthly medal winners: The Class-A champion Sammy Darza (net 69) and runner-up Wendell ner-up Jay Yuvallos (net 64); Class C champion Justin Uy (net 67), runner-up Johnny Siao (net 69); Class D champion Clark Cinco (net 70), runner-up Albert Cang (net 71); Senior’s champion Manning Granada (net 68), runner-up Ruben Almendras (net 70); Guest champion Toby Florendo, runner-up Edu Manzano.
All the class winners, except for three, had gross scores in the 80’s even with fully aerated greens. Can you can imagine what the score would have been if…
There is an AMCHAM Phil-Am Friendship party at the Marriott Hotel ballroom on July 1. Those who want to join the celebration can get tickets from Marriott GM Karl Hudson and consul John Domingo. There will be loads of raffle prizes, including airline tickets to the US and Guam, and there will also be dance music by the renaissance band.
GOLF TIP. If you are often hitting the toe of your driver or pulling your tee shots to the left, it maybe because your upper body is rotating to impact and then ‘quits’. This shortens your arms and pulls your arms inside the target line, preventing you from making any proper release of the club.
A good drill to help you develop the proper rotation of your torso through impact and follow-through is to practice that part of the swing only. Pretend that you have already completed the backswing/downswing and is at the impact position. Address your stance by placing your weight on the left side with hips cleared, shoulders slightly open and bring the club to the full follow-through position. Without the momentum of the swing, you will rely primarily on your torso rotation to get you there and the arms will follow.
