SWU Cobras hold back
By Marain C. Baing Sun.Star Correspondent

South Western University (SWU) almost made it back into mainstream collegiate basketball. The Cobras backed out at the last minute.

SWU, a former basketball powerhouse which has been on hiatus for four years, vowed to be back this year but decided to postpone its comeback to next year.

“They were supposed to be back this year but begged off because the team felt that the players are still very raw and not yet very competitive,” Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said.

The Cobras last got hold of the championship trophy in the 2000 Cebu Amateur Athletic Association, and last saw action during the final round of the first season of Cesafi in 2001, where it finished third. It was disbanded the year after.

Had the Cobras pushed through, it would have been the third basketball team to join the league this year. Don Bosco College earlier confirmed it will put up a college team and Cebu Eastern College decided to return in the juniors division.

Tiukinhoy said SWU would spend the entire year to prepare for the next season.

Its other teams, on the other hand, will continue participating in the other events of Cesafi.

Meanwhile, basketball teams have until today to complete their line-ups and accomplish all necessary documents. The screening of athletes will be held tomorrow at the Cebu Coliseum.
