Serna: Full plate By Roger Serna Sounds and images
By all indications, today’s a busy one. There’s the first of the three-day run of the stage play Doubt slated at Onstage! of the Ayala Center Cebu with fine actress Cherie Gil leading the pack of talented thespians from Manila including Niccolo Manahan, Cathy Azanza and Jay Glorioso.
Written by John Patrick Shanley, Doubt’s Cebu run is through the efforts of Hendri Go’s Little Boy Productions.
Nearby, at the South Surface parking area, to be exact (still at the Ayala Center), Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano entertains music lovers with the show Gary V Live.
Over at the Pacific grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, the Grand Chamber Awards Night unfolds with invited guests and nominees for the awards at stake being treated to a grand event a la-Oscar Awards complete with a red carpet for the guests to tread on, on the way to their assigned seats with paparazzi and television hosts throwing questions to interesting personalities as they come along.
So… smile and be sure to show off your best angle! You’re on camera!

Here’s the continuation of the Boracay tale (o-ha!) which started as a dream, and which our ‘fairy godmother’ Rosemarie Gaisano turned to reality.
While perhaps one of the first things that any Boracay virgin may think of to make his or her first steps on the fine white sand of the famed tourist destination as comfortable as possible is to step on Havaianas flip-flops, yours truly’s rebellious nature, as far as fashion is concerned, somehow surfaced and thus I clung to my ever-reliable Spartan sandals (take note, Jonji Gonzales!).
The group had to resist the temptation of the clear sea surrounding the island (we have so much of that in Cebu anyway) for some other concerns, like taking a fast glimpse at the nearby places…especially those nearest to the Boracay Regency Beach Resort and Convention Center where we stayed.
We took a look at the neighboring Sherap Hotel. Then, we moved on to the souvenir shops for some window-shopping and a few buys if the temptation was beyond resistance already.
Dinner was near the talipapa where fresh fish, shrimps and crabs were cooked to our specifications with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ornopia assisting the food handlers for faster service. We made sure no cameras were clicked as our cebaceous glands activated themselves.
Had it not been for a late night bedtime the previous night, everyone could have gotten a taste of the Boracay Saturday nightlife. Most of us (Rosemarie, Ryan Mark, Troy Ciar and yours truly), however, succumbed to the lure of the comfortable bed.
Asian Spirit’s Edwin Pumatong and The Freeman’s Divine Ngujo were not to be downed by exhaustion, though. They set out for a walk and be among the active night bodies.
They underestimated the weather, though, and came back later dripping wet (haha!) but obviously in high spirits.
The following day was marked by a three-hour walk from Station 2 (that’s where we were) to Station 1 (including a stop at the Holy Rosary Parish church) where the business structures still left a wider expanse of white shore which yours truly treaded on barefoot. Sunblock was, of course, slathered generously.
The intentionally-delayed dip into the blue finally happened at 4 p.m., after a brief nap which lasted till dusk. An open-air complementary buffet dinner was held near the shore with Boracay Regency manager Joseph Dilag joining us for an animated chat.
It turned out that Joseph had spent a number of years in Cebu resorts and related establishments. He also joined us for breakfast the next day.
This time, the group could not let the night pass by without us savoring a drink or two in one of the night spots there, a drizzle notwithstanding. A Japanese motif accommodation was what we enjoyed while downing just a bottle of beer. A tricycle ride brought us back to the Regency shortly after midnight.
The planned early morning jog (barefoot, supposedly) did not materialize due to the incessant rain. Nor did the swim at the resort’s second pool. Breakfast was filling with Rosemarie’s bacon recipe (as told to the chef) relished by everyone with gusto.
A few snapshots here and there and we were on our way back to the mainland and to Cebu with the promise to stage a comeback once the next opportunity knocks.

By the way, catch Sandara Park at the Gaisano Main at 7 p.m. and at the Country Mall at 8 p.m. tomorrow for the first draw of the Shop for Scholarship promo of the Gaisano malls.
You might be the lucky one to be picked as Sandara’s inspiration onstage for her entertainment numbers. Look your best, then.
