Majority of Mandaue public schools flunk fire safety measures: report

Only three of the 37 public elementary and high schools in Mandaue City have fully complied with fire safety measures prescribed for school buildings, the city fire department reported.

Inadequate firefighting equipment, worn-out or defective electrical connections and lack of perimeter wall or fence are the common defects observed in the public schools.

Most of the city’s private schools, though, including the colleges and universities, were found to have fire preventive measures and proper electrical maintenance.

These were the findings of the fire safety inspection that the Mandaue City fire department conducted in all public and private schools recently.

Safety

In his letter to Mayor Thadeo Ouano last June 26, City Fire Marshall Oscar Mayol said the inspection was conducted as part of their program “to ensure the safety of the school buildings, teachers, students and visitors.”

“It is for this reason that we are furnishing your office a detailed copy of the inspection result indicating the defects and deficiencies noted because we found out that most of the schools that have violations with regards to the Fire Code of the Philippines are public schools,” Mayol said in the letter.

Only the Cesar Cabahug Elementary School in Barangay Looc, Tabok II Elementary School and Ibabao-Estancia Elementary School were able to fully comply with the fire safety standards.

The inspection team also found out that all the eight colleges and universities in Mandaue have proper fire preventive measures and electrical maintenance.

As for the private elementary and high schools, only seven have inadequate fire fighting devices.

Findings

School principals and administrators were informed about the results immediately after the inspection of their respective schools, Mayol said.

He also gave copies of the findings to Mandaue City Schools Division Superintendent Lorna Rances, Commission on Higher Education Director Enrique Grecia, Councilor Rosita Benabaye and Councilor Allan Borbajo, hoping they can correct the deficiencies noted. (ROV)
