Karate in Olympics remains ‘a dream’

The Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) is hopeful that karate will be included in the Olympics, but it will take more years to realize that.

PKF president Ed "Dong" Ponce can only beg the different members of the International Olympics Committee to include the martial art sport in the Olympics which needed two-thirds votes from all its members.

"Actually hindi natuloy yung votings in the last meeting sa IOC," said Ponce via long distance interview from Cebu.

Dream

But Ponce is hopeful that in the coming meeting later this year the voting will take place again and finally come up with the two-thirds votes required by the By Laws of the Olympics Committee.

This was one of his dreams, aside from winning gold medals in international competitions, when he was inducted to office for his second term. He he elected during the 2004 PKF National karate championships and elections in Cagayan de Oro City.

Training

The PKF, as of now, can only focus in the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar on December where eight of the Philippines' best karatekas will be sent to Europe for rigid training starting this August, which will last on the last week of November.

Ponce has named Southeast Asian Games grandslam gold medallist Gretchen Malalad as the first of the eight to be listed in the Asian Games-bound karate team. (JAF)
