Ozamiz chess tourney starts today
The 1st Ozamiz City Open Chess Tournament officially kicks-off today at the Congressman Hilarion Ramiro Jr. Gymnasium in Ozamiz City.
Grandmasters Mark Paragua and Eugene Torre and International Masters Oliver Dimakiling, Richard Bitoon and Barlo Nadera will be toured around the city from the city hall to the tournament venue in a motorcade starting at 9 a.m.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines president Prospero Pichay Jr. will join the motorcade.
Charter day
The players and officials will also be presented at the Ozamiznon at the Cotta, an Old Spanish fort, as part of the city's celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of the Cross and its charter day.
The tournament proper will begin at 1 p.m.
Paragua will be seeded no. 1, Torre seeded no. 2, Dimakiling is seeded third, Bitoon, fourth, and Nadera, fifth.
Final norm
Cebu's Kim Steven Yap will try to nail his third and final National Master norm in the three-day tournament, which offers more than P70,000 in prizes.
Other cebuanos who will try their luck at a second NM norm are Richard Natividad, Francisco Abugho, Voltaire Sevillano and Carlos Moreno III. (JAF)
