Limpag: Free international text from Smart
By Max Limpag
Cell talk

JULY PROMO. Smart Communications is offering registered subscribers one free international text message for every minute of International Direct Dial (IDD) calls this month.

Smart subscribers can avail themselves of this promo starting July 6 by typing IDD and sending it to 8910. Registration is P2.50. The free international text, according to Smart, will be credited to the registered subscriber’s account the following day and is consumable within the day.

The Smart IDD Libre Text Abroad promotion is open to all prepaid subscribers in the Smart network: Smart Buddy, Talk ‘N Text, Addict mobile prepaid (AMP) and Smart Kid Prepaid.

NEW WALKMAN PHONE. Sony Ericsson launched in May another model in its Walkman line, the W850 (see photo).

From press images sent by the company, it looks to be a sleek and elegant phone. It comes in “Precious Black” or “Golden White” colors.

The model is the first GSM/UMTS slider phone for the company. It comes with a full horizontal mode for its 2 megapixel built-in camera.

What’s cool about this model is its “heartbeat illumination” feature where the control keys light up in synch with the rhythm of the music your playing in the phone.

The phone is revolutionary in the sense that it allows fast music downloads direct to the handset. The company said the phone “is configured for operator over the air (OTA) music download services.” You can bet your 1G handset that pretty soon, telcos will start selling full music tracks for OTA downloading.

The phone comes with a whopping 1GB memory stick PRO Duothat is expandable to 4GB. The 1GB memory stick is enough storage for around 1,000 songs in e-AAC+format.

The phone also comes with the Walkman player 2.0 software, which “simplifies navigation through music genres, playlists, individual songs or music albums.”

It also comes with TrackID, a feature powered by Gracenote Mobile

MusicID. With the service “you can record a few seconds of a song, either via the microphone or the FM radio, and then with one click send that clip to the Gracenote worldwide music database that will identify the track and relay the information back to the phone.”

Stop drooling. The phone will be available starting the third quarter of this year.
