Ouano asks schools to fix deficiencies noted in BFP report

Mayor Thadeo Ouano will be meeting with Department of Education (DepEd) officials to discuss the results of an inspection conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on all public schools in Mandaue City.

Ouano said he will ask DepEd officials to comply with the recommendations given by BFP to correct the deficiencies in the fire safety measures of each school.

Of the 37 public elementary and high schools in Mandaue, only Cesar Cabahug Elementary School in Barangay Looc, Tabok II Elementary School and Ibabao-Estancia Elementary School have proper fire preventive measures and electrical maintenance.

Inadequate firefighting equipment, worn-out or defective electrical connections and lack of perimeter wall or fence are the common defects observed in the public schools.

Purchase

Ouano said the expenses for the purchase of firefighting equipment and the re-wiring of the schools will have to be charged against the Special Education Fund.

He said he will direct the City Engineering Office to inspect the schools so they can come up with a cost estimate.

City Fire Marshal Oscar Mayol, in his letter to the mayor last week, said the results were also given to the school principals or administrators immediately after the inspection.

He hopes the schools can correct all the reported deficiencies.

“It’s important that they comply because accidents happen when you least expect them,” Ouano said in Cebuano.

As for private elementary and high schools, only seven have inadequate fire fighting devices.

All eight colleges and universities in Mandaue have proper fire preventive measures and electrical maintenance, the report said. (ROV)
