3G hit ‘uncertain’
There is no assurance yet of the success of third generation (3G) of cellular phone service in the Philippines.
However, cellular phone service provider Globe Telecom, will continue to invest in its 3G infrastructure despite the uncertainty, company chief operating officer Gil Genio said.
He confirmed in an interview that its 3G service is facing various issues, including different frequency in other countries, which has resulted in the failure of the technology to launch.
“In the Philippines, at first, we thought we don’t need 3G. But since we are in it already, we will continue. We believe 3G is an alternative Internet access,” Genio said.
Samsung corporate marketing head Angie Limbaco earlier said one of the reasons that Samsung has not manufactured 3G-capable phones yet is the failure of the technology in other countries, such as Singapore.
Genio said one of the factors that affect the success of the 3G service, aside from the high cost of the handsets, is the cellular phone penetration level of a country.
“China is not on 3G yet because cell phone penetration rate is low,” he said.
The 3G technology is the newest service being offered by cellular phone companies such as Globe and Smart Communications Inc. to its subscribers.
Genio said about 100,000 of Globe’s 12.4 million subscribers are now attached to the 3G network.
“We are looking for ways and means to increase the attachment,” he said. (JBN)
