Ng: Back to normal By Wilson Ng Wired Desktop
One of the wonders of technology allows people to write wherever they may be. Unknown to many, I wrote one of my columns a few weeks ago while I was on a three-hour bus trip a few thousands miles from here.
I wrote the article using my HP Ipaq cell phone with a thumb keyboard and screen barely three inches in size. It’s not as easy as using a laptop or personal computer but, yes, it can be done.
Anyhow, the Cebu Business Month (CBM) is over, and now I can go back to my normal daily routine. For those who still don’t know, I have been blogging for almost two years now (blog is short for weblog, which is a Web site that is less formal and more personal, where people share personal thoughts or insights on current developments). One of the things I did when I started to chair the Cebu Business Month was to start blogging about it in www.ngkhai.net/cbm2006.
It is a great vehicle to communicate, and it is more intuitive and easier to maintain than a normal website. What it means is that on a regular basis, if there are new developments, new schedules, or new pictures, I just post it on the blog. It’s a great way to keep in touch with a large group of people and updating them.
As of today, I have had over 11,000 page views on the blogs, and I would like to think that some of the success of the Cebu Business Month was attributed to the regular updates I posted there.
The blog is also a great vehicle to share speakers’ Powerpoint presentations, event pictures (of which we have over 400), as well as thank the sponsors.
One of the most often commented part of the CBM was the word “InTourPreneur.” Somebody in Quezon City asked if they could use it in their event, and somebody just registered www.intourpreneur.com and www.intourpreneur.net.
The situation is something we did not foresee, but the person registering it is a regular in my blog. For now, though, I think the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) would not mind, provided that he will not also use it for other things except to promote information and communications technology (ICT), tourism and entrepreneurship.
I’m proud of the way various members of the CCCI worked together to help in the advocacy of important developments and make the public aware of the growth of business process outsourcing, the ascendancy of health and wellness industry, the promotion of tourism mentality, the introduction of new ICT services, the potentials of franchising, and the cultivation of entrepreneurship.
I believe that the institutionalization of the criteria for the entrepreneur of the year award also encourages people to look at the way they do business.
While we received several compliments about how well organized the event was, there were some comments that simply made our day: “The event made me become aware about my responsibilities as a businessman, and encouraged me to think about how to become a more responsible entrepreneur.”
PHOTO GALLERY. I would also like to share one of the things I did to promote Cebu, which was the creation of a picture gallery of Cebu. This started over a year ago, and our idea was just to post pictures of different people, places, and events in Cebu. Many people have helped out, and now, the gallery contains well over 2,000 pictures of Cebu.
This website gets over a thousand page views every day, and had over 170,000 total page views since it was created. But one of the things I am particularly proud of is the few hundred pictures of the different towns and municipalities in Cebu that various people have contributed.
If you want to look for pictures of Cebu, or have nice pictures of Cebu you want to contribute and share, take a look at www.ngkhai.net/cebupics.
