Cebu Scrabble prexy: Include our sport too in DepEd curriculum
After President Arroyo approved the Chess in School program of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP, another sport wishes to be included in the curriculum of the Department of Education.
Cebu Scrabble Club president Avelino Guatno, a top-10 word-wizard of the Philippines, thinks scrabble should employ scientific approach as that of literature, mathematics and science, in Philippine schools.
He cited that Cebuanos excel in the sport especially at the top level since six Cebuanos are among the top 20 players in the Philippines. The six are Teodoro Martus Jr., Orville James Alagaban,Joel Toroy, Roly Tee Navarro, Michael Laput and Ursita Aparre.
Better finish
Arroyo’s approval of the chess in schools came to the light when the NCFP proposed the program to her after the RP Women’s squad surpassed its 40th place in the last edition of the World Chess Olympiad in Instanbul, Turkey and by finishing at 26th place in this year’s Olympiad in Turin, Italy
“What we lack, I think, is someone to toss this (program),” said Guatno. (JAF)
