Chiongbian: The Copa de Golf success
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

The success of the Copa de Golf tournament easily translates into plain words: the tournament format was simple, the venues were excellent, the sponsors were committed, the cost was reasonable, the prizes were good, food was abundant, the awarding program was entertaining, media coverage was proficiently done, and the membership base was properly tapped. The working committee, the most important ingredient – did its work.

If you’re planning a tournament of any sport, these are the things you should consider and put it into an action plan. Eighty percent is a passing grade but remember that the committee is “the sliding factor” that can make or break the tournament. So no matter how you think that this is not important, make sure you have no controversial personality in the committee because it will surely affect the outcome.

SLOW MOTION. And what is the reward for a job well done? Yeah to the two Nonoy’s Alba and Tirol, you will get to do it again next year. By the way, if you are still left wanting and not yet full from watching yourself on the big screen during the awarding, the edited footage will be seen on RCTV channel 36 in about two weeks. I have seen your swings with the camera on, and man, I swear you were doing it in slow motion so you would hit the ball and so your swing would look good. But let me tell you, you can never fool a video camera.

Congratulations to the champions San Jose Bakeshop with Marc Gonzalez, Blake Go, Jojo Tongco and Mark Dy; first runner-up Metroland Holdings with Victor Gocela, Enrico Solon, Dennis Canoy and Lino Dagus; second runner-up Mactan Memorial with Salimbangon brothers Benhur, Freddie and Cesar and Antonio Queteves; third runner-up Astorias Farm with Toto Parco, Raul Mabanto, Henry Uy and Manning Granada. Maxci Borromeo took the award as golfer of the year for Casino Español.

The highlight of the evening was not when the dance floor was filled with over zealous dancing kings and queens but when Cheling Sala, Nonoy Tirol, Rico Gandionco individually went up to the stage and sang with the band. I would have wanted GL up on the stage but he was to busy with Tina to worry about who’s there and what they were doing.

Coming up next week is the golf tournament of the Federation of Seniors at Mactan Coral on the 12th of July. Danny Flores is working very hard for this event so I know that he will give you a great tournament. And the Chairman’s “Aznar” Cup has already been scheduled on Aug. 12-13 at Alta Vista. This tournament has become one of the pillar tournaments of Alta Vista so make sure you get in on this one.

This time of the year and month is the time for induction of new officers for the Rotary Clubs. New District governor Fernando Jun Almeda from RC Metro Surigao is here to visit the new officers of the Rotary Clubs in Cebu and listen to their plans for the year. So me as outgoing president of RC Cebu was happily thinking of extra golfing days and of relaxing from the pressures of leading a club. And as sure as day, I was rewarded with more work to be done.

Now they made me assistant governor representative for RC Cebu, RCC Port Centre, RC Tabunoc and RC Carcar. And not completely happy satisfied with that, DG Jun Almeda greeted me with an announcement that I am also now the Media Manager for Rotary in the Visayas. But…but the only thing I know is co-media! So what’s the lesson here? Do a good job, not a great job because your will be doing it for the rest of your life!

GOLF TIP: The three components for controlled and repeatable golf swing are balance, rhythm and timing. In order to stay balanced during your swing you must start in balance. What happens in the swing is largely a reflection of what is created at address.

To enhance your rhythm and timing you should start the takeaway with a swing (with the arms) rather than with a body turn.

Swinging doesn’t create tension, whereas turning does. That is why great golfers always begin their motion by swinging the club back rather than by turning the body.
