PF’S Yap leads race for PBA MVP honors
As the Purefoods Chunkee Giants began their quest for a PBA All-Filipino Conference Finals title yesterday, the Giants’ top player James Yap doubled his efforts to help the team win the championship against the Red Bull Barakos and maybe snatch the Most Valuable Player trophy in the process.
Yap, a native of Cadiz, Occidental Negros, currently leads the pack of MVP hopefuls with 1,876 statistical points – 40 percent from the Fiesta Conference and 60 percent of individual stats up to the semifinal round.
The Giants shooting guard is followed by teammate Kerby Raymundo (1,843 statistical points) and Red Bull’s Enrico Villanueva (1,831) at third with.
Another Barakos starter, Lordy Tugade, occupies fourth spot with 1,644, followed by the Giants center-forward Marc Pingris (1,606).
The voting for all the awards started yesterday and will last until Game 3 of the best-of-seven title series. The winners will be announced in Game 4.
Yap has been quoted as saying that he isn’t that interested in the MVP plum as he is in a championship for Purefoods.
Meanwhile, Larry Fonacier of Red Bull leads the way in the Rookie of the Year race with 1,330 points, followed by teammates Paolo Bugia (1,069) and Leo Najorda (940). Mike Holper (883) and Air21’s Nino Canaleta (766) complete the top-five contenders list. (JSV)
