Australian body appoints Cebuano in commission

A former councilor of Toledo City was named new commissioner of the NSW Community Relations Commission in Australia.

NSW Police Constable Tom Baena was appointed as one of the 10 commissioners.

Baena, 47, served as councilor of Toledo City in 1976 to 1980.

Baena, a community lea-der who is also a major in the Australian Army reserve, was immediately congratulated by the Philippine Consul-General in Sydney, Theresa Lazaro.

He is the third Filipino to be appointed as commissioner since the commission was established in 1975.

Relations

The NSW Community Relations Commission is a government board established to promote relations between the different ethnic communities across the state.

It is composed of 10 commissioners appointed by the NSW Premier for a term of three years.

The commission’s chairman, Stepan Kerkya-sharian, has developed ties with the Filipino community in NSW and is frequently seen in Filipino gatherings, including the annual fiesta held by the Philippine Australian Sports and Culture Club.

Fulfillment

“The consulate congratulates and welcomes the appointment of Mr. Baena in the Community Relations Commission,” Lazaro said.

“We wish him all the success in the fulfillment of his duties with the best interests, not only of the Filipino-Australian community but also with the broader multicultural spectrum of migrant communities in Australia in mind,” she added.

Baena has been with the Australian Army Reserve since 1985.

He was nominated as Police Officer of the Year in 1999 for his involvement with Cabramatta City Police and Community Youth Club.

He is also one of the founders of the Australia Philippines Services League, composed of former and present members of the Philippine and Australian armed forces.
