Serna: Play for play By Roger Serna Sounds and images
The season for stage plays has begun, or so this columnist thinks. Last weekend (Friday to Sunday), Little Boy Productions brought the award-winning play Doubt to Cebu at the Onstage Ayala to SRO crowds.
The audience’s appreciation (amazement?) of the performances was very evident at applause it gave to the performers at curtain call (could it have been a standing ovation had someone at the front row dared show the way?).
Cherie Gil, Niccolo Manahan, Cathy Azanza and Jay Glorioso truly deserved the accolade they received as they kept us on the edge of our seats throughout the play, not only with the material but also because of the characterizations.
More of these, Little Boy Hendri Go!

Speaking of plays, multi-awarded playwright and director Al Evangelio has come up with a dramatic piece Ang Silya. It can be recalled that the famous director also earned acclaim with the staging of Oedipus Rex last February.
This time, Magimo Productions, a group of seven young students, dared to produce the play out of their allowances with the aim of helping local talents graduate from amateur performances in the hands of professionals.
It held a Critique’s Night last Saturday at the badminton court of the Southwestern University’s College of Arts and Sciences building. The performance was aimed at letting invited guests, assigned as critics, to pass judgment on whether the play could be recommended for students and public viewing.
Believing that such a procedure deserves support from school administration, Southwestern University’s Chief of Staff, Atty. Manuel Daguinod, wholeheartedly accepted the hosting of the Critique’s Night.
Ang Silya traces the development of the criminal character to confront the audience with the very essence of crime – is it in the genes?... in the needs?... is it due to the environment? …social influence?... circumstance? … or pre-destination?
Playing the lead role of Jimmy is Eumier Erasan of Balamban. Aside from the value-laden script, the play also boasts of the avant-garde presentation employed by the playwright-director.
Playdates for the play are July 22, 23, 26 and 27 at the SM City Cebu Cinema One. Mark those dates.

Gio Ando, information officer of Dumanjug, during our last visit to the southwestern town last month, intimated that the Suroy Suroy Sugbo project of Gov. Gwen Garcia has started bearing fruits in his town.
He accounted that several local tourists driving their own vehicles had been dropping by their town inquiring about the native roasted chicken that Dumanjug is famous for, and the natural and man-made wonders of the locality.
Recently, Albert Chan Paran of E. Apostol St., Lower Calajoan, Minglanilla, expressed his gratitude to the governor for coming up with such a project (he joined the Northern Escapade) which, according to him, had ‘unlimited island hopping, resort hopping, festivities, eating, cultural presentations, parties, souvenir shopping, picture taking, singing and dancing for three days and at very affordable prices at that!’
Mr. Paran recounted his enjoyment having joined the governor at breakfast in Daanbantayan and dancing under the rain in Bantayan. He narrated having been inspired by the governor and expressed his support for all the latter’s programs and projects.
He even went as far as encouraging the governor to be ‘the third Lady President of the Republic of the Philippines for the next election.’ He also commended the graciousness of the gov’s staff and the kindness of her son, Paulo.
Mr. Paran sounded so overwhelmed by the experience, considering that he joined only one tour package. How much more if he was able to join all three?
Anyway, just be on the lookout for announcements of the schedules of the next tour around the province when they get off the planning board.
