Creation of mega regions tops agenda in Glo meeting today

The creation of the “Central Philippines Super Region” will be the main agenda during joint Cabinet and Regional Development Council (RDC) meeting today at the Macalañang sa Sugbo.

President Arroyo will preside over the meeting.

Presidential Assistant Joe Capadocia said Arroyo will arrive at the Mactan Benito Ebuen Air Base and will make a stopover at the construction site of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC), before proceeding to the venue of the meeting.

From 10 a.m. to noon, 44 Cabinet secretaries, governors of Region 4-B (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan), Region 5 (Bicol), Region 6 (Eastern Visayas), Region 7 (Central Visayas) and Region 8 (Western Visayas), the RDC chairman and five members of the RDC executive committee will gather in Malacañang sa Sugbo.

Arroyo will deliver an opening statement followed by the presentation of the agenda report by Economic and Development Secretary Romulo Neri.

A media brief released by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) said that the details on how to go about the proposal remain vague but the primary objective is to hasten the country’s economic growth by concentrating the development of the four proposed super regions.

The other mega regions are North Luzon, Metro Luzon and Mindanao.

House Deputy Speaker Raul V. del Mar, quoted by the PIA during yesterday’s briefing, said the creation of the four super regions will make it easier for the National Government to provide the essential services and projects.

The present set-up has 13 regions.

Del Mar (Cebu City, north), who favors the proposal, said the four mega regions can also expect supplemental development efforts as a whole, apart from the projects intended for the cities, towns and provinces, since the proposal will not abolish the existing groupings of several provinces into regions.

The League of Provinces headed by Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado is also supporting the President’s super regions proposal. (EOB)
