Bautista vows to train hard for Vegas fight
After he was forced to skip what could have been the turning point of his career – fighting in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios match last July 2 – Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista promised to bounce back with a vengeance in his next fight on Sept. 16 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“I promise to train harder to make you proud of me,” Bautista told a crowd during the “Rambol sa Island City Mall: 40th Tagbilaran City Charter Day Boxing,” last Monday.
Bautista, who was replaced by his sparring partner Michael Domingo in fighting Mexican Felix Alejandro Montiel, expressed his disappointment.
“I was really prepared to fight Montiel. I didn’t vacation in San Diego (California) to prepare. But I was struck down by flu and had to back out a week before the fight,” Bautista said.
Montiel, who was described as an acid test for Bautista, turned out to be an over-the-hill fighter as he did not even put up a good fight against Domingo.
“I believe if I was the one who fought Montiel, the fight would not last more than three rounds. I could have destroyed him easily,” said Bautista.
Domingo scored a knockdown in the first round before finishing the Mexican in the seventh.
The Las Vegas card features the rematch between Marco Antonio Barrera and Ricardo “Rocky” Juarez.
Golden Boy Promotions Inc. president Oscar de la Hoya requested for Bautista to appear on the card. (RCM)
