Vicente “Badong” Valdueza of Yaw-Yan Pasay and Adamson “The Assassin” Torbiso of Durex Dragon Kickboxing Club of Lapu-Lapu faced each other for the first time yesterday ahead of their the five-round kickboxing 130-pound main event fight in tomorrow’s “Ground and Pound” at the Cebu Coliseum.

Both fighters promised a thrilling fight during the Sportswriters Communicators Organization of the Philippines forum at the Baseline Restaurant.

“Dili ko makasiguro pero paningkamuton lang nako (I cannot promise anything but I’ll do my best),” said the Pasay-based kickboxer, a native of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.

Non-committal

Torbiso was just as non-committal: “Tan-awon lang nato karong Sabado (We’ll see what happens on Saturday).”
Event-organizer Benigno “Ekin” Caniga followed the same line.

“Both have equal chances based on height, weight, age and fighting experience,” said Caniga.

The two kickboxers have impressive fight records. Valdueza has a 2-2-0 win-draw-loss record in the Universal Reality Combat
Championships, while Torbiso is 1-0-0 in the URCC. Their kickboxing records were not revealed.

“I was able to join the URCC only once,” said Torbiso, as he pointed out the difficulties of traveling back and forth to Manila. Although he has fought in a lot of kickboxing matches in the Visayas.

Co-main event

Meanwhile, the kickboxing bout between Mercito “Guerrero” Gesta of CMAC Kickboxing Club and James “King Solomon” Garcia of Yaw-Yan Pasay is the co-main event.

Garcia failed to arrive in Cebu yesterday but sent word he will be here today with just a day’s rest before the fight.

“Maayo sab unta to’ kung naa siya aron makakita sab ko sa edge nako sa iya (It’s better if he was present so that I can see what advantage, if any, I have on him,” said Gesta, who was accompanied by his mother and his father, Cito, the founders of CMAC KC.

Fifteen-year-old Johnlery “Ian” Caniga of Yaw-Yan Ardigma was among the guests in the Scoop forum. He will take on Ronald “Ruby” Alinsug of Angel Technique Club in a children’s MMA exhibition match.

Fighters from Wushu Sanshou of Cagayan de Oro City and Muay Thai Association of the Philippines of Dumaguete City will arrive today.
