Minus top fan, Siso siblings resume careers By Marian C. Baring Sun.Star Correspondent
For the first time since Dino Siso passed away, his brood of young tennis superstars will be reviving their careers, minus their coach and number one fan.
The highly celebrated Siso siblings Bernardine “Niño”, Sally Mae and Sallydine will be raiding the tennis courts without their father on the sidelines, when they compete in the Milo National Age Group Tennis Tournament today in Ozamiz City.
The three have not joined a single tournament since their father’s health started failing and today will be the first time that they see action after months of lull.
Dino was a major figure in the skyrocketing popularity of his kids, whom he trained into becoming national and international standouts. To give his children exposure, he had looked for sponsors to send them to competitions all over the country and abroad. He died last May of cancer.
The Sisos, however, are positive they will continue what their father had instilled in them and that they will not squander the reputations he helped them build up.
Sally Mae is the country’s top-ranked player in the Girls 12 years old and under, while Niño ranks within the top three in the boys’ side of the same age bracket.
“We know that he will still be there to guide us even if he is not here physically,” Niño said.
The 13-year-old Niño will be competing in the Boys 14 and Boys 16, while sister Sally Mae will play in the Girls 12 and 14 classes. Their older sister Sallydine, on the other hand, will see action in the Girls 14 and 16 divisions.
The Sisos join the lean team of Cebuanos, who are trying their luck in the three-day national tournament.
Also with them are fellow University of San Carlos South Campus varsity player Kristel Mae Buenacosa and Kimberly Trager, University of the Visayas’ Cyril Camporedondo, Larry Antigua and newcomer Jake Carba, University of Cebu’s Lovelie Soquiño.
Although he has not seen who his major opponents will be, Niño is looking forward to facing Antigua in the Boys 16 division, whom he last defeated when the two met in the 10 years old and under unisex division years ago.
