Red Bull cuts Purefoods’ series lead, 2-1

THE Red Bull Barakos got back at the Purefoods Chunkee Giants, 89-79, yesterday to reduce the Giants’ series lead, 2-1, in their best-of-seven finals series.

Lordy “Alaminos Assassin” Tugade played another huge part in Red Bull’s win as he led a third-quarter uprising to finish the game with 22 points and take home the Best Player of the Game award.

Enrico Villanueva also played big for Red Bull as he chipped in 12 points, while Junthy Valenzuela of Bogo, Cebu, chipped in 11 markers. Also contributing to Red Bull’s victory was Cyrus Baguio, who added 10 markers and Celino Cruz, who had nine, all from the 3-point area.

Sensing that the Giants always win the game in this series every time they have a strong start, the Barakos beat the former to it as they started strong, racing to a 16-13 first-quarter lead and increasing this to a 39-34 spread at the bend.

Rally

Red Bull extended its lead to 16 points with a rally instigated by Cruz and Tugade before Purefoods trimmed this a bit, 52-66, entering the final canto.

Purefoods cut Red Bull’s lead to just seven, 65-72, with still 7:45 left but the Giants failed to maintain the momentum, giving Red Bull a chance to tie the series when the two squads met again in Game 4.

Meanwhile, a remarkable performance in the Gran Matador Brandy-PBA Philippine Cup has earned Danny Seigle the Best Player of the Conference award.

Ironically, the award came as a surprise for the San Miguel All-Star forward, who wished he was still playing.

The 6-foot-7 Seigle garnered 1,216 out of a possible 1,440 media votes and pulled away with a total of 2,532 votes.

“I’m a bit surprised I won because normally this award is reserved for players who are in the finals,” said Seigle, who won the honor at the expense of three candidates disputing the coveted Most Valuable Player trophy. (JSV)
