Carvajal: Just how dense can our politicians get?
By Orlando P. Carvajal

I know our politicians can get very dense, when convenient. The title is less a question than a cry of utter disgust at how they refuse to see the point of the stand of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on the opposition’s impeachment complaint and on the administration’s initiative for Charter change.

Why should the opposition be dismayed with the CBCP’s non-support of the impeachment complaint? They know their move is neither a search for truth nor a run for the common good. People perceive it as a purely self-serving political maneuver, designed to oust President Arroyo and install someone acceptable to them in power.

And why should the administration gloat over this part of the CBCP’s statement? They know why the CBCP is not supporting the opposition’s move and yet is supporting Bishop Deogracias Iniguez’s impeachment complaint. They must also know that, in fact, three bishops are scheduled to file impeachment complaints soon and these will get CBCP support.

The opposition can’t seem to see that the CBCP is not supporting their impeachment complaint because this comes from people who are not interested in the truth but only in creating an opportunity, including non-constitutional opportunities, for them to take over the reins of government.

The CBCP further believes that impeachment is a good way of getting to the truth if done by credible people. But neither the filers (politicians) nor the hearers (Congress and politicians still) of the complaint are credible.

The administration can’t seem to see that the CBCP is quite clear about the need to pursue the search for truth, the truth about the allegations of cheating by the highest official of the land.

Moreover, the CBCP, in the same statement, declared its non-support of the people’s initiative for Charter change for the reason that the people’s initiative is not a genuine search for what is the best form of government but the administration’s idea of how it can get out of the present fix without being skinned alive.

Both opposition and administration can’t seem to see that the CBCP is trying to tell them that they have zero credibility with the people, that the people believe they are up to no good with their impeachment and Charter change moves, and that they should shape up and work together to solve the people’s problems, which are basically food on their table, roof over their heads and education for their children.

The people are scandalized that they fight among themselves wallowing in luxury, while the people eke out a living in the rough economic seas that their infighting leaves in its wake.

Like always and as expected our politicians are playing dense. Hence, the ball is once more in the hands of the bishops. Carry on CBCP while you still have some credibility left.
